Smart speakers and digital assistants are at the heart of every smart home. In this video we compare the audio and sound quality of the new Google Nest Mini (2nd Gen) with the original Google Home Mini. With the two speakers placed inside an acoustic chamber, equidistant from the edges and each other, recorded with a RØDE NTG1 professional shotgun microphone recording onto a Sony HXR-NX80, this video compares the sound quality from both devices by listening to two pieces of music from different genres to assess the difference in sound quality with the Nest Mini.

The treble and bass on both Minis were set to 0, and they were positioned at equal distances from the side walls of the acoustic chamber made from acoustic foam panels. The microphone was boomed above them in the middle, to ensure it was the same distance from each speaker.

The Google Home Mini decibels sound pretty good for such a small speaker, but how does the new Nest Mini compare when it comes to listening to music and sound quality? The new, 2nd Generation Nest Mini sounds far better than the original Google Home Mini from 2017; you can tell the difference straightaway, whether you’re listening to music or podcasts – the new speaker has improved clarity across all tonal ranges, sounds less tinny in the high-end and is clearer, deeper and more powerful and impressive in the low end.
